What’s Worth Loving

Before my grandmother lost her mind and made those loud gasps for air until it just ran out, I asked her, ‘Grandma, what’s worth loving?’

Rubbing me to sleep, she said, ‘Well, I think the things in this life worth loving are the things you’ll never have to prove yourself to. Like, take a look at this pathetic bed that waits around all day just for you to come home so it can wrap its blankets around you and hold you to sleep. I’ve never accomplished anything in my life but making my kids—and I didn’t even do a good job with that—but your grandfather still waits around all day for little old me, just like this silly bed.’

Tonight at a concert, I didn’t have anywhere to put my gum, so a boy said, ‘Spit it in my hand.’ I did. He stuck it on a beer can, and went back to watching the concert like nothing happened. Now that’s worth loving.
